The warsaw ghetto uprising
Vladka Meed
Unlike many of the other key figures of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, Vladka Meed (Feigele Peltel) was active in the Zukunft, a strong Jewish socialist-democratic party. The organization was opposed to Zionism and advocated the Yiddish language and culture. However, this difference in views didn't stop her from being an active member of the Warsaw Ghetto from its first days. Meed was able to help the resistance with her "Aryan" appearance and fluency in Polish. She was a sucessful underground courier and smuggled weapons to the ZOB. She also helped Jewish children escape from the ghetto and helped lead them to Chritian homes where they were sheltered. Her assistance to the resistance didn't end there. She also helped Jews who were hiding in the city and established contact with those still surviving in the labor camps. After the Holocaust, Vladka Meed worked hard to make sure the memory of the dreaded times lived on.
