Tosia Altman

Tova (Tosia) Altman worked with Mordechai Anielewicz during the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. She was a member of the ZOB. Initially, Altman worked as a courier, helping to spread information to Jewish resistance groups outside the ghetto. Not only did she provide them with information about plans of the resistance, but she also provided them with educational material that had been banned by the Nazis. Later, she was responsible for smuggling weapons and explosives into the ghetto. The Germans attempted to capture Tosia and failed, and she was one of the few members of the resistance to survive the battle that killed Mordechai Anielewicz. She did suffer severe injuries to her head and leg, but she was able to escape the ghetto. However, Altman was later captured by the Germans when the factory she was using for shelter caught on fire and she suffered severe burns. She was taken into custody by the Gestapo and died shortly after, receiving no medical treatment. Overall, Tosia Altman played a crucial role in the uprising.
